Sun Damage vs. Rust: What I Look For

Why "Rust-Free" Isn't Enough

If you are shopping from Ohio or Michigan, you are likely terrified of rust. That's good—Texas rigs are usually clean underneath. But Texas has intense UV exposure that cooks rubber and plastic.

When I inspect an RV, I climb onto the roof to check for "alligatoring" on the TPO membrane and brittle, cracked sealant. Northern buyers often miss this because they are looking for salt. A clean frame doesn't matter if the roof has been leaking for two years.

Identifying Sun Damage

Sun damage manifests in ways that photos won't show:

Exterior: Oxidation on the gel coat and "checking" on the sidewalls (tiny hairline cracks).
Seals: I physically test window and slide-out seals. If they are hard as rock, they won't keep water out.
Interior: UV bleaching on upholstery and flooring, which tells me how the rig was stored.

Preventing Wasted Flights

Traveling to Texas to look at an RV is expensive. There is nothing worse than spending $800 on a flight and hotel only to realize the "Mint Condition" RV smells like mold or has a knocking engine.
